With any hobby that we undertake we can find the hardest element to be sourcing the equipment we require and paying the expense that comes with it. Art and all the forms it may take is becoming increasingly popular as an enjoyable hobby for many people. Undertaking any hobby craft project involves buying art materials and art supplies specific to your chosen field. The availability of materials is vast and wide ranging and can cover any angle you might want to take with your artwork. If you are a beginner within the arts and want to take on or experiment with new projects you can look into hobby craft supplies.

Many are sold as craft kits in which you get a mini project to work on with a varied range of the necessary materials needed. Such craft kits generally veer toward more creative forms such as glass painting, relief painting, porcelain painting and the more traditions acrylic paints sets not forgetting oil paints and watercolour paints. These choices are great for experimentation and because you can try the medium out with a smaller hobby craft kit, you do not have to feel overwhelmed with art supplies if you do not end up liking the technique. A hobby like art is also great for making personal, custom gifts for family or friends. This also allows you to get the family involved in artistic projects, trying out and creating artworks together. Even if you are a beginning in the world of arts and crafts you shouldn’t be put off by expensive art materials and the amount of supplies you may require. Once you have honed your artistic talents you will realise the materials are about quality, not quantity and many art suppliers actually cater for this change, supplying goods for beginners’ right through to the avid professional.

A lot of us are also customising our homes too, which means hobby craft materials like fabric paints are really popular at the moment. Even other paints like antique paints are great for home furnishings like mirrors – and add a personal touch to the decoration.  Many suppliers, especially online, offer fantastic brands, which vary in levels so you don’t have to begin with the very expensive materials. Browsing online also allows you to look through and study the information with regards to art supplies to see whether you think they might suit your style and technique.  And if you need further help you can always contact the art supplier direct and they will assuredly endeavour to give you suitable advice.Â

Even if you have organized your retirement to include travel, hikes, golf, bowls, book clubs and grandchildren, after the initial flush of free time fades, you might find that there are periods when you need a little more mental stimulation.

While indulging in your hobbies, with probably a lot more gusto that you previously had time for, you might consider the possibility of actually earning some money from them. Now, I don’t mean selling your wares, but of course if they are easily posted ebay can be a great marketplace for you.

What I am referring to you is selling you knowledge. Whether it is sports, crafts, cookery or photography, you could use your retirement to join thousands of others who are making a profit out of their skills.

The secret to making money from what I’ll call your collective “hobbies” is to approach the project as a labor of love. Love of your hobby.

          ]]>

If you can remember back to the days when you first started your hobby, you were keen to gather as much information as you could about how to master it. Learning about the different methods, patterns, tools etc that could be used was a great adventure. You may still be on the journey!

With the aid of the internet, you are able to share your knowledge not just with your grandchild (who may not be interested anyway) but with people around the world who want to know how to master that particular hobby. Who knows? You could be a master at it, without even knowing.

Writing an e-book is a very easy thing to do, and couples who work together on these projects often enjoy the whole process. Learn how to create a simple website to use as your sales page (don’t be scared – its easy with a capital E) – another great skill that you will use over and over again. Include how-to photos are great – heck you can even make a short “how to” movie with your digital camera and post it on You Tube, linking back to your web page.

There are very easy methods that automate payment and direct download of the document you create.

Take the time to do a Google search to see what information is already available on your hobby, and see if you can do something similar, but better. It’s important to not over-value your e-book or article. It is much better to have 1000 purchasers at than 100 at !

It was a cold, dark, dreary morning as it usually is on a Monday. This is the day that Samuel has to go to work. And, if you know anything about his 9 to 5 job, it would be a cold, dark, and dreary, morning for you, too.

Imagine having to live this out every Monday for the past twelve years. The agony never seems to end. It feels just like a prison sentence that one will never escape.

Do you ever feel like this? Dreading to go to work? Having to take orders from a nasty boss who seems to enjoy tormenting your peace of mind? Well, if that is the case, you’re going to love reading this article. But, you must take your time to read it to the very end.

No cheating!

In this article, we’re going to review three money making techniques that the experts use to fatten their bank accounts. And, the best thing about it is this: you will be doing this with your hobby and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to get started.

The first technique that we will discuss to bring in money with your favorite hobby, passion, and/or interest is article marketing. The next thing we will take a look at is forum marketing.

And, the last technique we will discuss is creating your own information product that you can sell on the internet for many years to come.

          ]]>

Let’s go!

1. Article Marketing: What is your hobby? Is it collecting fossils? Coin collecting? Or oil painting? No matter the hobby, you can write articles about your passion or interest. Post it on the internet. Specifically, article directories. And, make money when someone clicks on the link that you put in the resource box.

This link could be one that leads to your website where you are selling a product. Or, it could be a link that takes the reader to the website belonging to a merchant of which you will be paid a commission for promoting their product.

2. Forum Marketing: If you enjoy talking about water gardening, the joys of cooking, or board games….you can bet your bottom dollar that there is a forum a.k.a., community of likeminded people talking about it, too. So, why not join the conversation?

And, make some money while you’re at it. You will make money when someone reads your post. Sees the promotion link in your signature line. Clicks on it and buys the product. Whether it is your own product or that of which you are receiving an affiliate commission.

3. Information Publishing: Can I ask you a question? How many books have you bought on your hobby? One? Two? I’d venture to say that if your hobby is say, stamp collecting, making sculptures, quilting, or fill-in-the-blank, you have more than one, two, even three books and/or magazines on the subject.

Hobbyists will pay for information on the very thing that brings them happiness. In this case, it is their hobby. So, why not get a piece of the pie by creating your own product around your own passion and sell it online? I’d say this is a good idea!

In this article, we went over three ways in which you can make money with your hobby, passion, and/or interest. The first thing we looked at was article marketing: making money writing articles around your interest.

The next thing we discussed was forum marketing: making money by posting on forums about your hobby interest. And, the last thing that we reviewed was creating your own information product to sell on the world wide web.

If you’re anything like Samuel on a Monday morning and you’ve been longing to get out of the 9 to 5 rat race and start a home business of your own, there is no time like the present to make your dreams come true.

Click on the link in the resource box before the page is taken down. Best of luck, my friend!

I believe that we all need to have at least one hobby in our lives. Many people have told me that they aren’t creative and they are afraid to take up a hobby because they don’t want to waste money on something they may not like or may not be good at.

Some hobbies are not expensive but you do have to purchase the necessary items you need to get started and by doing this, it could get a little costly depending on what it is you choose as  your hobby. When I hear people tell me they aren’t creative I usually ask them if they have ever tried to do anything creative. The answer is usually, “no”. Well, how do you know if you aren’t creative until you try? It’s hard to get motivated sometimes and even harder if you aren’t sure exactly what it is you want to do.

The real thing here is the challenge. That’s what I like. In fact, challenging myself is how I learned to become an artist in the first place and my interest eventually turned into a career as an artist, a faux finisher and a prop fabricator. Many people simply have a God given gift of creativity but many people just don’t know it.

Take my youngest sister for example. When she was younger, she couldn’t even draw a stick person or so she says. She always envied others who could draw so instead of trying to draw, she pretended to ‘teach’ school in her bedroom. My sister didn’t realize she was extremely talented until she was a grown woman. She told me that she got interested in decorative painting and stenciling. She bought magazines and ‘how to’ books on the subject and she ended up teaching herself how to paint. My sister was also interested in sewing but really didn’t know how so she taught herself how to sew. As time went by, she turned a spare bedroom into her craft room and what she taught herself to do turned into a lucrative business. My sister didn’t really have a business but she did murals for home owners, made window treatments and elaborate draperies for home owners and she even taught herself how to uphoster furniture.

About a year and a half ago she showed me photos of many of her creations and I was completely amazed. She had painted some murals inside a church along with a lot of trompe l’oeils (meaning: to fool the eye). She transformed the walls to look like stones, she painted archways, faux windows, etc. The results were simply amazing. I never in my wildest dreams imagined my sister was so creative and so talented.

All the years my sister didn’t think she had any talent proved her wrong. All it took was the ‘want to’ and this is what I tell other people when they say they aren’t creative. All you have to do is want to.

Today, there are many many sites on the Internet that teach almost anything you want to learn from how to make jewelry to playing the guitar. When I got interested in wire jewelry a couple of years ago I found some great tutorials on YouTube. There is one in particular that teaches you everything from the basics to the elaborate step-by-step. I was so interested in this jewelry that I went to my favorite craft store and bought a book and some basic materials including the hand tools which are essential for creating this type of jewelry. I had always kept cans of beads I had collected over the years so I pulled them out and started incorporating the beads with the wire and made some beautiful pieces. One of my favorite pieces is a necklace I made for my sister. I used sterling silver wire and rosary beads that I removed from a rosary that was over a hundred years old. The beads are tiny and white with a bluish tint to them. The necklace took awhile to create because I made many small coiled hearts from the wire, put a bead at the bottom of the ‘V’ and connected them all together with wire. The clasp is a beautiful sterling silver clasp. I was very proud of this necklace as it was my very first attempt and it turned out great. I wanted my sister to have it because she loves jewelry and I knew she would appreciate it as a keepsake from me.

          ]]>

I began creating earrings from my very special beads and my favorite bead colors are cobalt blue, deep red and green. I love beads made of glass. Again, I used sterling silver wire in various gauges and began wrapping the wire around the beads to create a very unique look. Although I don’t wear any of the jewelry I make, I do love to create it. I have my favorite pieces of jewelry I like to wear; pieces given to me from my family.

There is one extremely special necklace I created and I keep it in my safe. From over the years my husband and son have given me beautiful necklaces, most with diamonds and precious stones. Because I can’t possibly wear them all and I don’t want to show any favoritism, I decided to create a very unique, very special necklace to honor ALL the pieces given to me. I purchased a beautiful sterling silver chain that was strong enough and long enough to hold all the pieces. I even added a second piece of chain that I connected sideways. It actually looks like a loop within a loop.

I removed all the pendants from all the chains and earrings and attached them to the sterling silver chains. I balanced them out so the necklace didn’t look odd. I added my own favorite pieces of ocean glass and a few of the old tiny rosary beads that were left over from my sister’s necklace. When the necklace was finally finished, I put it in a beautiful padded necklace holder box. My husband and I went to an engraving shop and had a sterling silver heart engraved. On one side is our names and the other is the day we were married. I never wear this necklace because I wouldn’t want to lose any of the pieces but I will give this to my daughter some day.

One of my other hobbies is painting and this is probably my favorite. Throughout the years I invested in quality easels and have a table top easel, and a large Windsor-Newton ‘H’ frame studio easel. I also invested in a ‘true light’ lamp that is very important to have if you want your colors to be exact. True light is North light and if you don’t have a window that faces North, this lamp is a must to have. I paint in acrylics and oils and have several paintings I am eager to finish. I have in mind some I want to start. I like starting several at once so I can go back and forth and not get bored or burned out on just one.

Another valuable piece of equipment I have and love is a nice piece of tempered glass. Instead of using a regular artist’s palette I like to use the glass. The glass sits on a cabinet that houses some of my materials and is perfect for my use. The great thing about using tempered glass is that the paint can be easily removed and the colors look truer than when paint is sitting on a palette. I don’t have to hold anything in my left hand while I paint, I can just reach over and dip my brush in the color I want. I learned this from a very talented artist who paints portraits.

Painting to me is very calming. I never turn on music. I like to simply focus on what I am painting and nothing else. I learned a few ‘tricks’ to successful painting a long time ago. One is to turn the canvas around away from site when you are finished for the day. This is so you can get a fresh look at it some other time providing the painting is in a location where you don’t walk past it all the time. Another ‘trick’ and this is extremely helpful when painting portaits, is to hold the painting up in front of a mirror. This is has to do with our creative side of our brains and allows our non-creative side of the brain see if the painting is flawed or looks correct. You would be amazed at this experience. Seeing a painting in a mirror is like looking at it with ‘fresh’ eyes. It really helps get a better perspective of the painting.

Don’t ever think you aren’t creative until you try. Even if you fail the first time just remember that trying something new is usually a little difficult at first. If you want to paint and fail the first time at it, remember this: It’s only paint. It can be painted over. The more you paint, the better you get at it. A little advise about any hobby: Don’t invest a lot of money into your hobby until you know for sure that you like it. Also, don’t start too many projects at once. You may end up with many unfinished hobbies.

Just remember that having a hobby is suppose to be fun and that’s what it’s all about!

Hobby farming, also known as sustainable farming or sometimes family farming, can be a great way to explore your personal interest in growing vegetables, raising livestock, or even beekeeping while engaging in a home grown business venture that incorporates family togetherness and quality time as much as building a successful home-based business.

Starting your own hobby farm can begin with something as simple as referencing your personal experiences. Traveling, family history, and even exploring seemingly unrelated hobby interests like cooking or soap making can yield the inspiration to start and run your own hobby farm.

Knowing about cultures and history can also help in guiding your vision. Tracy and David Toth are one couple whose Pennsylvania hobby farm experience was profoundly influenced by a trip out West to the Navajo Nation, where they learned first hand about Navajo-Churro sheep and how and how the Navajo people formed a cultural relationship to the farming of these hearty animals, using the strong and beautiful wool to weave the blankets and rugs the tribe is famous for.

          ]]>

But a successful hobby farm didn’t happen over night for the Toths. Only years later, when Tracy picked up a magazine featuring the Navajo-Churro sheep at a local tractor store in Pennsylvania, did all the inspiring images come flooding back. Between this personal experience, and her husband David’s practical ROI approach, the Toths chose to specialize in raising Navajo-Churros, forging what they feel is a personal connection to the centuries old Navajo tradition and sheep-raising culture.

Even the breeders who sold the Toths their first sheep could tell that they were on a mission motivated by thier travels in the rugged Arizona environment and their experiences on the reservation.

Some people have farming in their family heritage and can look back over the generations to see what worked, what was part of their own cultural background. But new farmers and people without personal farming traditions should never be afraid to look to the success of other cultures for inspiration for starting their own small-scale farms.

Hobby farms come in many shapes and sizes, and each hobby farmer has his or her own unique perspective and experiences that led them to start-up.

Small-scale farming can be a great way to spend quality time with your family, too. In the olden days, when small-scale farming and agriculture was one of the main ways of making a living, all family members were required to do their part to make the family farm a success.

In today’s modern world, many have become estranged from working the land or raising animals, disconnected from the environment and other living creatures from which we gain important staples for living: milk, meat, wool, and other foods.

Starting a family-owned specialty farm, like the Toths did, can be a great way to re-connect with both loved-ones and the world around you.
